AN IMPORTANT UPDATE FROM STATE ATTORNEY KATHERINE FERNANDEZ RUNDLE ON TROPICAL STORM ETA
November 7, 2020

I am continuing to monitor Tropical Storm Eta and weather conditions very closely.  As expected, Eta strengthened this morning and was upgraded from a tropical depression to a tropical storm.

As of the 4 p.m. advisory this afternoon from the National Hurricane Center, the center of the storm was located around 85 miles north-northeast of Grand Cayman with winds reaching 60 mph.

A Hurricane Watch has been issued for much of South Florida as Tropical Storm Eta moves to the northeast.  Tropical Storm Eta is moving to the northeast at 16 mph and is expected to pass over Cuba today and continue strengthening as it moves towards the Florida Keys.

The Hurricane Watch was put in effect this afternoon for the coast of southern Florida from Deerfield Beach to Bonita Beach, and for the Florida Keys from Ocean Reef to the Dry Tortugas, including Florida Bay. That includes all of Miami-Dade and Broward counties.

Additionally, a Storm Surge Watch is in effect for the coast of southern Florida from Golden Beach to Bonita Beach, including Biscayne Bay, and for the Florida Keys from Ocean Reef to the Dry Tortugas, including Florida Bay.

A State of Emergency was declared in Miami-Dade County yesterday by Mayor Carlos Gimenez, and residents of Broward County are also being asked to prepare for possible tropical storm-force winds and heavy rain throughout this weekend.

Forecasters said there is a possibility of between 6-10″ of rain possible for South Florida with isolated areas seeing even higher amounts of rainfall. Tropical storm-force winds between 35-45 mph are possible, with gusts reaching as high as 60 mph. Additionally, there is a possibility for isolated tornadoes, with that threat being mainly on Sunday and Monday.

The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch for South Florida through Tuesday evening with the possibility of up to 10 inches of rain over the next five days. Forecasters predict some areas could receive 6-8 inches of rain with isolated areas receiving up to 10 inches.  A Wind Advisory has also been issued for coastal Broward and Miami-Dade counties that could be extended as Tropical Storm Eta moves closer to our area.

I again want to remind everyone that this is the time to prepare if you have not done so already.

For those of you who have never experienced a tropical storm, I recommend you visit the Red Cross and National Hurricane Center websites for information concerning preparing for storms. We must always be fully prepared for the worst while hoping for the best as South Florida does get affected by heavy rain and winds when there is a tropical storm in the area.

As those of us who have weathered numerous storms in Miami know, preparation prior to a storm is the key to securing our personal safety and our professional operation. Storms bring lots of rain, strong winds, and the resulting flooding of streets.  Please take all warnings and preparations seriously.

I urge you to keep in contact with your supervisors and monitor our social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram and Twitter), as well as our Website www.miamisao.com for updates regarding whether our Office will be open on Monday.

As we have more updated information on Tropical Storm Eta, we will be sure to send out additional advisories via our media platforms.

I am hopeful that you, your family and friends, and our community as a whole, is protected and spared as much as possible from this  storm.

Be well and stay safe.
