Miami, Fla – State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle announces that as a result of an effective partnership effort by the State Attorney and her prosecutors of the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office, Miami-Dade Public
Defender Carlos Martinez, Administrative Judge of the Criminal Courts for the Eleventh Judicial Circuit Nushin Sayfie and Daniel Junior, Director of MiamiDade County Corrections and Rehabilitation Department (MDCR), 19 additional individuals who were serving their jail sentence in MDCR will be released early as a result of an Agreed Order To Terminate Jail Sentences Early Because Of The Coronavirus Disease.

“I want to thank all my criminal justice partners for assisting me and my office in this continuing endeavor to reduce the number of people held in our local jails so that we can reduce the chances that COVID-19 could infect jail inmates, correctional officers and staff,” said State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle. “Releasing lower risk inmates, shortly before their jail sentences end, can create space for newly arrested dangerous offenders charged with committing violent crimes like murder, rape, and armed robbery, prevent a COVID-19 outbreak in
the jail, and reduce the drain on public health resources. This collaborative process of review for suitable sentenced inmates and nonviolent pretrial detainees will continue as our community deals with the COVID-19 pandemic.
