Miami – November 8, 2018

On December 6, 2017, several inmates at the Miami-Dade County Pre-Trial Detention Center overdosed on Fentanyl. Two of these inmates survived and two were pronounced dead. The decedents were identified as Jesus Perdomo, 25, and Juan Salgado, 24. Detectives with the Miami-Dade Police Department Homicide Division responded and took charge of the investigation.

On November 7, 2018, the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s office sought Indictments for First Degree Murder for Nathaniel Vargas, 35, and Carlos Martinez, 43. Defendants Vargas and Martinez are also both charged with Introduction into or Possession of Contraband in a County Detention Facility. Defendant Vargas is also charged with a third count for Possession of a Controlled Substance with Intent to Sell, Manufacture, or Deliver.

The Indictments result from a combined effort between the Miami-Dade Police Department, Miami-Dade County Medical Examiner’s Office, the Miami-Dade County Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, and the Miami-Dade Office of the State Attorney.

State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle will be available this afternoon to discuss these arrests. Please contact the State Attorney’s appointment secretary at 305-547-0535 to schedule an appropriate time.
