The Office of the Miami-Dade County State Attorney offers a wide range of employee benefits, which favorably compare to those of major organizations and law firms. The Flexible Benefits Plan allows you to pay for insurance premiums on a pre-tax-basis. This means that your premiums are paid before your federal income tax and FICA taxes are calculated. The following is a summary of the benefits offered.*
Employees may choose between a Standard and Health Investor Plan, of which both types offer a PPO Health Plan which is managed by Blue Cross/Blue Shield, or from three (3) HMO plans. Prior to being sworn to the Florida Bar and becoming an Assistant State Attorney (ASA), monthly premiums are: $50.00 for the Standard individual coverage and $180.00 for the Standard family coverage, or $15.00 for the Health Investor individual coverage, or $64.30 for the Health Investor family coverage. Once you are sworn in as an ASA, The State will pay a majority of your premiums, regardless of the selection of plans.Disability Insurance
Once you are sworn in as an ASA, you will be eligible for individual disability coverage at no cost to you.
All full-time employees regardless of classification, will have an automatic, free basic life insurance benefit of $25,000. Your employer pays the entire premium for this benefit. The coverage begins the first day the employee physically reports to work.
You will also be eligible for a variety of Supplemental Insurance plans including long term, cancer intensive care, convalescent care, etc.. Rates for these policies vary dependent on coverage selected.
You may choose from a number of Dental and Vision Plans. Premiums vary dependent on coverage selected.
The Florida Retirement System is employee noncontributory (the employer makes your entire retirement contribution). The normal age for retirement benefits is 62 with at least 6 years of service. Your retirement benefit is calculated by a formula that uses the total number of years worked, the value of each year and the average of your best 5 years of service. Other Florida government employment, as well as military service, may qualify as credible service.
This is an excellent way to lower your federal tax liability and to provide for additional retirement income by voluntarily investing money in your chosen investment option.
You will accrue annual leave on a monthly basis as follows:
A maximum of 360 hours of annual leave may be carried over from year to year and any remaining annual leave (up to 360 hours) at time of termination of employment is paid at the employee's current salary.
You will earn 8 hours and 40 minutes of sick leave per month (13 days per year). Sick leave may be carried over from year to year. After 10 years of creditable service and upon termination of employment, you may be paid for ¼ of your sick leave hours (not to exceed 480 hours of actual payment) at your current rate of pay.
After one year of employment and a total of 64 hours of sick leave credits, you may join our Sick Leave Pool. The purpose of this pool is to provide additional sick leave hours to employees suffering from a catastrophic, terminal or life threatening illness or injury after they have depleted their sick leave hours.
There are approximately 9 paid holidays during the year, including the Friday after Thanksgiving.
Each employee is credited with one personal (Floating) holiday on July 1st of each year.
You may be granted 3 days of administrative leave with pay on the death of any member of your immediate family.Educational Leave

Accrued annual leave may be used until all hours have been exhausted. The remainder of the leave time will be without pay. In the case of adoption, the period of parental leave shall not exceed 4 months and accrued annual leave hours may be used.
